Green Light for Curzon Wharf and Birmingham’s tallest ever building

Curzon Wharf, featuring plans for the tallest building in Birmingham has been given the go-ahead by city planners. The £360million development will see industrial land next to the A38 Aston Expressway transformed.

Curzon Wharf will feature Birmingham’s tallest building, at a height of 564 feet. Plans for the four buildings across the site include up to 732 student dwellings and 620 residential homes.

In addition to accomodation, space for retail, restaurants, pubs and bars will be provided. As well as this, a gym, bowling alley and cinema will feature.

Tallest Building

The Octagon building was previously the city’s previous tallest building at 508 feet, which will be dwarfed by the 53 storey building. Aviation lighting is required due to the height.

In addition, the development will include nearly 130,000 sq ft of office, R&D and life science space and over 3,000 sq ft of retail units. Plans include more than 15,000 sq ft of leisure space, over 76,424 sq ft of new and improved public realm.

Net Zero

The plans are part of a seven-year consultation process between the local authority and the Woodbourne Group who say this will be the world’s first mixed-use net zero carbon-ready development.

Prior to approval, the Leader of Birmingham City Council, Cllr Ian Ward said: "This exciting project will put Birmingham right at the forefront of green, sustainable development and underlines our determination to tackle the climate crisis, while also creating jobs and opportunities for people across the city.

"Birmingham has the ambition and vision to become a more resilient, sustainable and inclusive city and Curzon Wharf shows our determination to turn vision into reality.”

Developers say Curzon Wharf could generate well over 1,000 jobs and is expected to boost Birmingham’s economy by at least £151 million.

Tani Dulay, chief executive of Woodbourne Group, said: “We’ve worked hard to reach this point and it is incredibly satisfying to stand on the brink of delivering such a world class development for a city I’m proud to call home. I would like to thank the planning committee, our team and everyone else that has supported this scheme.
