Green light for Liverpool Street Station revamp
The City of London Corporation has approved plans for a major redevelopment of Liverpool Street Station.
The proposals will deliver a state-of-the-art, fully accessible station, alongside new commercial, cultural and public spaces.
Policy Chairman of the City of London Corporation, Chris Hayward, said: “This redevelopment of Liverpool Street station is a major step forward for the Square Mile.
“It will support the City’s dynamic business ecosystem with state-of-the-art infrastructure, create new jobs and strengthen our position as a world‑leading destination, while ensuring that residents, workers and visitors all benefit from a modern, inclusive and future‑focused transport hub.”
Liverpool Street has been crowned Britain’s busiest railway station for the third year in a row, recording almost 100 million rail entries and exits in addition to underground customers.
With passenger numbers forecast to rise to 158 million by 2041, the proposed redevelopment is designed to ensure the station is future-proofed and ready to accommodate more than 200 million people in the decades ahead.
Feedback
Feedback from station customers during the design stage was clear, with the top two priorities being step-free access and new lifts and escalators to increase accessibility to both the mainline station and London Underground.
Chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transportation Committee, Tom Sleigh, added “Everyone likes an upgrade, and this astonishing improvement to Britain’s busiest train station is just that; a major improvement by every measure.
The soaring Brick arches and bold architecture will cement Liverpool Street’s status as a modern temple to transport.”
