Liverpool City Council forges ahead with stalled Highways improvements

Liverpool City Council is pushing to complete five separate sets of highways improvements this month, following stalled work.

Five different schemes were stopped in their tracks in June, with Liverpool City Council immediately looking to push forward regardless.

Their initial request, to gain permission to appoint Siemens to complete traffic signals installation along County Road (A59) has been successful.
The five schemes have a combined £4.9m of work left to complete.

Following the stalled work, Liverpool city council moved swiftly to ensure the schemes presented no health and safety risks to motorists and carried out assessments of what works were outstanding to inform the tendering process.

LRS provided Land Referencing Services in the initial work to create a new dual carriageway for a major route into Liverpool city centre. A CPO was issued to allow widening of the A565 (Great Howard Street/Derby Road) as part of a £22m road improvement scheme.

The works to be completed are at
– Byrom Street
 – Walton Lane
 – County Road – A59
 – Kingsley Road
 – A565 – North Liverpool Key corridor

For the remaining schemes, Liverpool City Council is to advertise tenders on its procurement framework with the intention of appointing contractors within the next four weeks.

Councillor Daniel Barrington, Cabinet member for Climate Emergency, Transport and Environment, said:

“The stalling of these highways schemes has presented numerous challenges to resolve and to get them back on track.

“The upgrades to the A59 and A565, in particular, are of huge consequence to our overall highways network.

“I’m delighted that we’re now at the point of getting contractors back on site to complete these schemes.”

Highways Maintenance

This announcement comes alongside news that roads and pavements in Wirral are set to benefit from around £4 million of improvements over the coming year as part of the council’s annual Highway Maintenance Programme.

Works will be targeted at tackling general wear and tear and potholes to ensure that residents can continue to travel safely in Wirral.

The work to the surface of the roads will start in July 2021 with preparation works, such as filling in any potholes and sweeping the roads, happening first. This work follows on from the completion of last year’s programme.

All works will be carried out in the most environmentally friendly way possible as crews and contractors will work closely with suppliers to minimise the council’s greenhouse gas emissions and reduce waste.

Simon Fox, Interim Assistant Director – Highways & Infrastructure, said:
“Wirral’s road network is in good condition generally and is in the top quartile nationally. However, it needs continual investment to maintain it at that level.

“Repairing roads across the borough is essential to keep Wirral moving – whether that be by bike, on foot or in a vehicle – and our annual programme is a major investment to deliver on those expectations, keep our residents safe and help our borough with its economic recovery, post COVID-19.”
