National Highways launch M6 Junction 10 Art Competition
National Highways and Walsall Council launch art competition to enhance the gateway into Walsall showcasing artwork designed by local artists.
The art is to incorporate Walsall’s rich heritage and encourage a sense of community belonging, leaving a positive legacy of the new junction of the M6. Consequently it will be installed along the new footpath running alongside the A454 East, which is a well-used pedestrian route.
The selected artwork will be open for the appreciation of everyone, in turn leaving a positive legacy of the new junction of the M6.
Congestion
Currently, the congestion from junction 10 of the M6 affects the local community and businesses, particularly during morning and evening peak times.
LRS provided Land Referencing Services to the project, with improvements including replacing the two existing bridges with two new, four-lane bridges to increase capacity. In addition, work to widen the existing junction slip roads.
Works will improve the slip roads and approaches on the local road network and widen the westbound A454 Black Country Route.
Improvements
Improvements continue this month including final construction of the bridges and construction of the improved roundabout. This will ease congestion and reduce journey times.
During the announcement Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, said: “With Junction 10 on our doorstep, Walsall has excellent connectivity and is an attractive place for investment.
“Reducing delays and increasing capacity at this vital interchange will play an important role in strengthening our economy and improving the accessibility of our town centre."
The winning art designs will be produced on steel sheets, approximately 1.8m x 1.3m in size, and will line the footpath.

David Reed, Highways England Project Manager said:
“We are delighted to announce that John Sisk & Son have been appointed to lead this important scheme which will tackle congestion at a very busy junction at the heart of the country.
“This is a significant milestone for the project which will ultimately bring smoother and safer journeys for the many thousands of drivers using Junction 10 every day.”
