Go-ahead for Transformation of Stretford King Street
Regeneration
Go-ahead for Stretford King Street Transformation.
Plans for the transformation of Stretford King Street have been given the go-ahead.
The £13m project makes up a part of the wider Stretford Masterplan and will see improved transport links, pedestrianised streets and a new town centre.
After hosting a series of consultations, the council identified a number of consistent themes that helped shape the masterplan for Stretford:
» People want a better, busier town centre
» The area is ready for change, with improvements for the benefit of local people
» Improved connections around and across Stretford is a major issue. People want better pedestrian routes and links to the Metrolink
» Residents want a better quality environment, with more greenery and public open spaces
» The canalside is a major asset and is ripe for redevelopment and new uses
Sustainable
Stretford regeneration will create a sustainable town centre for the people, by revitalising the high street and surrounding areas to create an experience with community at the heart of it.
In addition, the plans include investment to create a new King Street Square at the site of the former Mall to provide market stalls and spaces to host events, along with transforming the existing multi-storey car park to make it more secure.
Following approval of the King Street proposals, plans for up to 800 new homes, a new green public open space, and a new canal side neighbourhood are due to be submitted later this year.
Economy Boost
Cllr Andrew Western, Leader of Trafford Council, said: “The extensive development of King Street and the wider Stretford area will significantly increase connectivity by introducing green and open spaces where people can come together and interact.
“With King Street playing a large role in the plans, the wider masterplan will enhance the quality of life for Stretford residents while boosting the local economy with the opening of a number of new businesses.”
The work is due to commence later this year and is set for completion in summer 2024.
According to the council website, the Town Centre Experience will include areas to shop, work, play and stay. The area will be greener and healthier with improved connectivity to link all neighbourhoods. This inclusive, dynamic mixed-use development will therefore create a new thriving community, with sustainability at its core.
