Major Regeneration Plan for Weymouth Harbourside

Weymouth harbourside area is to be modernised and enhanced as part of an ambitious regeneration project announced this week.

Weymouth Harbourside North Quay is to be 'front and centre' of Dorset Council's regeneration plans. The plans include improving the road layout and safety ahead of future development.

Last year a temporary car park was put in place after the derelict former Council offices were demolished.

The building had become abandoned in 2017. The site is earmarked to benefit from a £19.5 million Levelling Up grant awarded to Dorset Council to regenerate Weymouth.

Alternative Options

Dorset Council announced that it was seeking 'alternative options' for the North Quay and Weymouth Bowl sites. This was after potential development partners 'did not meet the standards' the council had set.

However, Dorset Council is now planning to improve the design of the road layout in anticipation of the site being redeveloped.

The council plans to widen the footpaths on both sides of the road. In addition, plans include moving the pedestrian crossing closer to the Town Bridge in order to create a 'safer more attractive environment for pedestrians'.

Dorset Council said: “Work is due to begin in early autumn and is one of the projects funded by the £19.5m government grant, awarded to Dorset Council in 2023. We will provide more details on the plan and any road closures nearer the time."

Projects

Other projects that the council is looking to bring forward are the Weymouth Bowl and the Peninsula.

Work on repairing harbour walls across the town is also taking place with repairs already made opposite the North Quay site.

Repairs are also about to begin on a £10 million year-long project to replace and strengthen the two main harbour walls which support the peninsula.

The peninsula project has also seen the creation of new facilities for fishing, charter and harbourside businesses, alongside improved public access.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said:

“We're driving forward a range of ambitious regeneration projects in Weymouth, with North Quay at the forefront.

“While we have not yet appointed a partner for this site's redevelopment, we're raising the standard of the road to the front of the site, substantially modernising and enhancing the design of the road layout and its public spaces in anticipation of the site being redeveloped in the near future.”
